A fatal mountain accident has occurred on the Lagginhorn in Valais.
Two women fell several hundred meters into the depths.
A 45-year-old German woman lost her life. The second woman was seriously injured.
On Monday shortly after 9.30 am, a group of eight mountaineers were descending unroped on the west ridge of the Lagginhorn, as reported by the Valais cantonal police on Tuesday. Suddenly, two women fell several hundred meters down the west flank in quick succession at the same spot.
The rescue services engaged by the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organization (KWRO) were on the scene with two helicopters from Air Zermatt. They were only able to determine the death of one of the women. The second climber received medical treatment on site and was then flown to the Inselspital in Bern.
The deceased was a 45-year-old German woman. The seriously injured victim was also a German national and 61 years old.
The public prosecutor's office launched an investigation in collaboration with the Valais cantonal police.
