The SVP has gained 5 seats in the Aargau cantonal elections and now has 48 seats. The FDP gained one seat, as did the small EDU. The Greens lost 4 seats, the GLP 2 seats and the EPP one seat. The Center Party and SP retained their seats.

The SVP and FDP, which often vote the same way, will have a total of 70 seats over the next four years. Together with the EDU, they have an absolute majority in the 140-seat parliament.

SVP President and National Councillor Andreas Glarner said it was "extremely pleasing" that the conservative bloc had been strengthened. "Together with the FDP, we can pursue stable, bourgeois policies," he told SRF. Since the parliament was reduced from 200 to 140 seats in 2005, the SVP has never had so many seats.

FDP President Sabina Freiermuth said: "I am very relieved and pleased that we were able to retain our seats despite many resignations." The FDP wrote in a press release that it had captured the spirit of the times with a clear, consistently liberal approach.

Election losers Greens and GLP

Green Party President Daniel Hölzle regretted the loss of seats. "As lost as won", said Hölzle on regional broadcaster Tele M1. Four years ago, the Greens had gained four seats.

The fact that the "right-wing conservative bloc" now has a majority in parliament will make the next four years "very difficult". GLP President Philippe Kühni also pointed this out: "Aargau will no longer be the same."

The new distribution of seats in the 140-member Grand Council is as follows: SVP 48 (+5), SP 23 (0), FDP 22 (+1), center 18 (0), Greens 10 (-4), GLP 11 (-2), EVP 5 (-1) and EDU 3 (+1). The voter turnout was 32.65 percent.

The SVP, the party with the most voters, gained 3.60 percentage points to reach a voter share of 33.90%. The FDP increased its voter share by 0.64 percentage points to 15.35% and the EDU by 0.21 percentage points to 1.81%.

GLP is stronger than the Greens

The biggest losers were the Greens, whose voter share fell by 2.57 percentage points to 7.44%. The GLP lost 1.03 percentage points and now has 8.21%. The GLP thus overtook the Greens and is now the fifth strongest force in parliament.

The SP's voter share fell by 0.41 percentage points to 16.14%. The Center Party increased by 0.05 percentage points to 12.86%. The EPP received 3.89%, losing 0.32 percentage points. There are now 42 women in the new parliament -0 two fewer than before.
