Bern City Council tackled another major financial debate on Thursday evening. It is discussing the deficit-ridden 2025 budget and the task and finance plan.

The municipal council is forecasting a deficit of 28 million francs for the coming year. The red-green majority of the pre-advisory finance committee is prepared to swallow this.

The additional debt associated with the high investments is necessary in order to be able to hand over an intact public infrastructure to future generations. However, the municipal council should prioritize.

The conservative camp rejects the budget, including the expansion of jobs and high new debt. The municipal council should go back to the drawing board, according to the rejection motion.

The debate is dominated by the elections at the end of November. The city council will adopt the budget on Friday.
