All in all, Basel is clean, the Civil Engineering Office announced on Monday. According to the measurements, the city achieved a cleanliness index score of 4.54 on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 standing for very clean.
At the lower end are the middle-class residential districts of Bachletten and Gotthelf. However, with a cleanliness index value of 4.42 in the first quarter of the year, things don't look too bad there. The Hirzbrunnen district is the cleanest, with an index value of 4.73.
More cleanliness in the working-class district
It is striking that the densely populated working-class district of Matthäus in Kleinbasel is cleaner according to the index, or was cleaner in the first quarter of 2024 than the upscale Bruderholz villa hill.
According to the press release, the Civil Engineering Office measures the cleanliness of streets and sidewalks using cameras mounted on bicycles and refuse collection vehicles. The residential areas are inspected daily.
The on-board computer connected to the camera detects and counts cigarette butts, broken pieces, chewing gum, leaves, scraps of paper and the like, which are recorded and located on the city map.
