Around 200 people took part in a rally against violence against women in Bellinzona on Tuesday evening. Two of the five femicides recorded so far this year have taken place in the southern canton.

Numerous women, as well as men and members of the Ticino cantonal parliament, took part in the rally organized by the feminist Ticino collective "Io l'8 ogni giorno" - "I fight every day" - against violence against women in the Piazza Governo in Bellinzona. The event took place on the fringes of the monthly meeting of the Ticino Grand Council.

The organizers read out 129 dates, locations and ages. 129 femicides - that's how many have been counted across Switzerland since the beginning of 2020. According to the organizers, there has apparently been an awareness of this gender-specific violence in this country since then. The national website "Stopfemizid.ch" also counts just as many femicides.

Society is struggling with the fact that women want to live self-determined lives, said one of the speakers. She appealed not only to politicians to help stop violence against women, but also to journalists. After all, the two femicides committed in Ticino this year had shown that media professionals found it difficult to call a spade a spade.

There was talk of a "bloody deed" when it became public on February 13 that a married couple had been killed and the woman died first. Everything starts with changing the language, said the member of "Io l'8 ogni giorno".

Criticism of education

The daughter of the woman murdered 11 days ago also spoke at the rally on the fringes of the monthly Ticino cantonal council meeting. Her mother did not believe in feminism, she said. Her mother had married "the monster" and hoped she was doing the right thing.

The young woman criticized education, especially at school. Girls need to be consistently taught that they have value, even without fulfilling a social function. Because before a woman is a woman, she is always first a mother or a lover or a wife. This was also seen at the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina: The winners were "winning mothers" or "winning wives", she criticized.

Bellinzona's municipal council is also concerned about the two recent homicides in the city. Municipal politics cannot stand idly by, writes a Bellenz councillor from the "Unità di Sinistra" in a question to the city council.

Among other things, the politician wants to know whether there are specific protocols for dealing with suspected or proven cases of domestic violence and whether municipal staff and social services are trained in gender-based violence and how to recognize the signs of risk.

Femicide is the killing of a woman because of her gender. This refers to the killing of women motivated by hierarchical gender relations. These are often carried out in (ex-)partnerships, but they can also take place outside of them.
