Following work on the tracks of the train line from Altstätten SG to Gais AR, the wheelsets of the traction units have been damaged. As a result, rail operations will have to be suspended for several weeks, Appenzeller Bahnen announced on Thursday. Replacement buses will be running.

The serious damage occurred during routine grinding work on the rails of the cogwheel railway line, according to Appenzeller Bahnen, which has been operating this line since 2006.

This incident occurred at the beginning of the week, a spokeswoman for the railroad told the Keystone-SDA news agency. It is now clear that "the complex repair work" will take several weeks. In addition, the timing of the resumption of rail operations depends on the availability of the necessary materials.

According to the press release, Appenzeller Bahnen is therefore assuming that a traction unit can be used again towards the end of September.

Replacement buses will be running during the interruption to rail services. Departure times will be in line with the regular timetable.
