For years, a Valais winegrower has been selling foreign wine under the designation "AOC Valais". Now a court has sentenced him to three and a half years in prison.

A Valais winegrower accused of wine adulteration receives 42 months in prison without parole. Between 2009 and 2016, he allegedly sold several hundred thousand liters of foreign, Schaffhausen and quota-free wine under the designation "AOC Valais".

The winemaker and wine merchant was sentenced by the court in Sion for fraud, dishonest business management, forgery of documents and incitement to forgery of documents, as explained by court president Sophie Bartholdi Métrailler at the sentencing on Monday morning.

This is the highest sentence handed down in a case relating to viticulture in Valais. During the trial, the public prosecutor's office and the plaintiff's side had demanded five years in prison.
