An articulated truck carrying six loaded cars caught fire on the A13 highway in Graubünden on Friday. It took the fire department hours to extinguish the fire. Extensive damage was caused to four new cars, the trailer and the road surface.

The road train was on its way from France to Italy, as reported by the cantonal police of Graubünden on Saturday. The driver noticed white smoke rising from the trailer shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday.

The driver stopped the truck in a construction site area in Soazza. The fire departments were in action for up to six hours in some cases. The police began investigating the cause of the fire.

The A13 - the most important north-south alternative route to the Gotthard - was temporarily closed completely. Heavy goods vehicles had to remain in holding areas. Other traffic was diverted via the cantonal road.
