Two Italian mountaineers have died while climbing to the summit of the Marmolada in the Dolomites. Their bodies were recovered by helicopter on Wednesday, according to the Italian news agency Ansa.

The accident occurred on Tuesday on the south face of the mountain. According to Ansa, the wife of one of the two climbers raised the alarm because the men did not return and her husband did not reply to a text message. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known.

The 3,343-metre-high Marmolada is the highest mountain in the Dolomites. It is a popular destination for mountaineers, but not without danger. On July 3, 2022, eleven people died in a rock and glacier fall - nine Italians and two Czechs. Climate change is considered a possible cause of the accident.
