Travelers should "not travel to Bangladesh" due to "ongoing unrest" in the capital Dhaka, the US Department stated in a travel warning on Saturday. In doing so, the USA tightened a previously issued travel warning, which had advised people to reconsider traveling to Bangladesh.
The State Department is also allowing the voluntary departure of certain US government employees and their families, it added.
Demonstrations possible at any time
"Exercise great caution", the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) advised travelers to and in Bangladesh. Before and during your trip, you should inform yourself about the current security situation, according to the travel advice on the FDFA website.
Demonstrations of any kind should be avoided, as riots are possible. Demonstrations could take place at short notice at any time. The situation in Bangladesh is currently unclear, the FDFA added.
At least 133 people killed
According to a count by the AFP news agency, at least 133 people have been killed in the protests in Bangladesh so far. Students in Bangladesh have been demonstrating almost daily for weeks against a government quota system that reserves more than half of the well-paid jobs in the civil service for certain population groups.
Soldiers have recently been patrolling the cities to nip the unrest in the bud. Riot police shot at protesters who did not abide by the curfew imposed by the government.
