There was a surprise in the women's 200 m race at the US trials in Eugene. The 100 m winner Sha'Carri Richardson misses out on a starting place for the Olympic Games in Paris.
The 100m world champion from Budapest 2023 had to settle for fourth place in a high-level race. 22.16 seconds was not enough for the World Championship bronze medallist to be allowed to compete over the half track lap in Paris in just over a month's time.
The race showed what Mujinga Kambundji, the World Championship bronze medallist from Doha 2019, can expect. Gabby Thomas in 21.81 seconds, Brittany Brown (21.90) and McKenzie Long (21.91) were well under the Bernese athlete's Swiss record (22.05) - she also ran her best time in Eugene at the 2022 World Championships.
Noah Lyles, on the other hand, left nothing to be desired in the 200m. The 26-year-old won in the annual world best time of 19.53 seconds, having already won the 100m. He now has several chances to win his first Olympic gold in Paris.
