Annik Kälin has a great first day in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in Paris. The 24-year-old has never achieved 3834 points at half-time before.
After four events, the woman from Landquart has 51 points more than after her best first day to date, the one in Götzis last May. The Swiss record of 6515 points will fall if the athlete from Graubünden manages a decent second day.
In addition to the Swiss athlete, numerous competitors are also performing strongly. In contrast to the men's decathlon, there were no favorites. Annik Kälin is in 6th place, already 122 points behind bronze. The long jump, the Swiss athlete's showpiece discipline, will follow on Friday morning. Others are better in the javelin throw and the 800m run.
The athlete from Graubünden opened the competition with a bang. With 12.87 seconds over 100 m hurdles, she not only achieved a personal best, but also took the lead. She then cleared 1.74 m in the high jump, threw the shot put over the 14 m mark (14.02) and ran the 200 m in under 24 seconds (23.88). "Super performances with an outlier in the hurdles," summed up Annik Kälin.
The medals are currently held by Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson (4055), Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam (4007) and the American Anna Hall (3956).
