The Swiss gymnasts finish the team competition in 7th place out of eight finalists. Japan secured gold ahead of China and the USA.
In contrast to the qualification, only three instead of four gymnasts perform on the six apparatus in the final; there is no scratch result. At the Olympic Games three years ago in Tokyo, the Swiss finished 6th, which would have been the maximum for Matteo Giubellini, Florian Langenegger, Noe Seifert, Taha Serhani and Luca Giubellini this time too, as the top 5 are too far away. 0.833 points were missing for a repeat, which was the difference to the sixth-placed Italians.
The Swiss made three major mistakes. On the vault, the first apparatus, Luca Giubellini almost fell on landing and received 1.167 points less than in the qualification, in which he had scored 14.600 points. Noe Seifert again failed his dismount on high bar, and Matteo Giubellini had to interrupt his routine on pommel horse. By their standards, the Swiss performed strongly on rings, their weakest apparatus. Otherwise, they only scored more points on the floor than in the qualification.
The 7th place is to be highly valued. The Swiss competed with five Olympic rookies and an average age of 23. The prospects are therefore promising. For the 29-year-old Serhani, it was the last competition of his career.
"I'm really looking forward to 'normal' life without top-class sport," said Serhani. He is now starting a degree at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and works 40% of the time as a coach at the Lucerne RLZ. How does he rate the performance in the final? "We made some unnecessary mistakes, but on the whole we are very satisfied. We were able to enjoy it, the atmosphere was incredible." Having experienced this will help the younger players in the future. "It's a very strong generation, I'm excited to see what happens next."
The Japanese won Olympic gold in the men's team event for the eighth time. They caught the previously clear leaders from China on high bar, which was the last apparatus for both, because Su Weide fell twice. The USA were back on the podium for the first time since 2008.
