Alex Vogel, the first Swiss track rider to compete at the Summer Games in Paris, is off to a good start in the omnium. The 25-year-old from Thurgau is in 6th place after two of the four disciplines.
Vogel, who started without great expectations and with an Olympic diploma as his goal, began with an 11th place in the scratch race and then made up five positions with the fourth best result in the speed race. The Belgian Fabio van den Bossche is in the lead after half the stint, ahead of the Dane Niklas Larsen and the Portuguese world champion Iuri Leitão.
Elia Viviani (13th), Italy's sprint star and 2016 Olympic omnium champion, and the Colombian Fernando Gaviria (17th), also known from the road, are outside the top 10. The elimination race is scheduled for around 18:25, with the final points race at 19:25.
