Lena Bickel is the old and new Swiss all-around champion in artistic gymnastics. Noe Seifert is also delighted to have successfully defended his men's title.
Lena Bickel won the gold medal in the all-around competition at the Swiss Championships in Biel, just like last year. Despite two falls, the 20-year-old from Ticino, who will represent Switzerland as an individual athlete at the Summer Games in Paris, lived up to her role as favorite. With 50.250 points, she came out on top ahead of Anny Wu (50.050) and Angela Pennisi (49.200).
Just over a month before the start of the Olympics, Bickel is a little worried about her right knee, which was damaged when she landed on the floor. Despite the pain, she pulled through the competition, competed on the fourth apparatus and ultimately secured victory on vault.
Seifert and Matteo Giubellini outstanding
In the men's competition, Noe Seifert secured his third all-around title, his third in a row. The 26-year-old from Aargau fought a duel with Matteo Giubellini at the very highest level. With 85.700 and 84.900 points respectively, the two were in a league of their own. Seifert's score would have been enough for silver at the World Championships last October. Third place went to Florian Langenegger with 81.100 points.
For the men, the competition also marked the end of a three-part selection process for the Summer Games in Paris. The three medal winners have the best chance of being included in the five-man Swiss Olympic team. The trio already made it onto the podium in the first two selection competitions. Seifert and Matteo Giubellini each won once, while Langenegger came third in each event.
