Shooters Chiara Leone and Audrey Gogniat are celebrated in Biel for their gold and bronze medals.
A few hundred people gathered at the Zeughaus site in Biel on Saturday evening, bringing flags and bells with them and making a considerable amount of noise as Chiara Leone and Audrey Gogniat took to the stage. The two women from Aargau and Jura won two medals for the Swiss Shooting Association at the Olympic Games in Paris. After Gogniat earned bronze in the 10 m air rifle event, Leone came up trumps in the 50 m small bore three-position match and was crowned Olympic champion.
He hadn't really known her before she shot gold, the presenter admitted, and had to read up on her first. After winning the European title in Osijek, Leone now has a much more prestigious title to add to her palmarès. "It's incredible that we were able to keep this title in Switzerland," said the 26-year-old, alluding to Nina Christen's gold medal in this discipline in Tokyo three years ago. "I hope it stays that way."
