Dunbar, who belonged to a breakaway group, took his opponents by surprise on the last kilometer and won by two seconds ahead of the Belgian Quinten Hermans and the Brit Max Poole. It was the 27-year-old Irishman's first stage win in a grand tour. However, he finished the 2023 Giro d'Italia in a strong 7th place.

The 166.6 km stage with start and finish in Padron had four mountain classifications, the last and steepest one eight kilometers before the end. Primoz Roglic used the last climb to break away from leader Ben O'Connor. The Australian lost 37 seconds to the Slovenian. However, he is still 3:16 minutes ahead of Roglic in the overall classification, who is aiming to win the Vuelta for the fourth time after triumphing three times in a row from 2019 to 2021. Third in the overall standings is now the Spaniard Enric Mas, who overtook the Colombian Richard Carapaz. Mas is 3:58 minutes behind O'Connor.

Mauro Schmid, one of two Swiss riders in the field, finished the 11th stage in 64th place, almost eight minutes behind Dunbar. Stefan Küng (95th) dropped from 31st to 39th in the overall classification.

The 12th stage is 137.5 km long and ends at the Manzaneda mountain station at an altitude of 1488 meters.
