The Dutch women dominate the start of the women's Tour de France in their home country. Demi Vollering secured the third stage win for a local rider in the time trial in Rotterdam.

The 27-year-old Vollering distanced the competition by five or more seconds on the 6.3 km city course and thus also took the maillot jaune. Last year's overall winner, who also won the Tour de Suisse in June of this year, replaced her compatriot Charlotte Kool at the top of the overall standings.

Kool had again won the stage in the morning, having already won the bunch sprint in the opening stage on Monday. With Lorena Wiebes and Marianne Vos, two other Dutch riders completed the podium. Wiebes took 2nd place in the overall standings, three seconds behind Vollering.

The two Swiss riders were unable to keep up with the best in the time trial. Noemi Rüegg finished in 100th place, 42 seconds behind Vollering, while Elise Chabbey was 139th, almost a minute down on Vollering. In the flat stage in the morning, they reached the finish with the field.

The Tour de France Femmes leaves the Netherlands on Wednesday; the finish of stage 4 is in Liège in Belgium. The stage will not reach French soil until Thursday. The course becomes more and more challenging as it progresses. The week-long tour ends on Sunday on the legendary Alpe d'Huez.
