Emmanuel Wanyonyi just missed the world record in the 800 m at the start of the Athletissima in Lausanne. The Olympic champion from Kenya completed the two laps of the track in 1:41.11 minutes.

This was just two tenths off David Rudisha's world record (1:40.91).

Wanyonyi is now tied with Wilson Kipketer for second place on the all-time list. The African Kipketer, who competes for Denmark, had lowered the world record to 1:41.11 minutes when André Bucher was running.

In Paris, Wanyonyi had beaten the Canadian world champion Marco Arop by a mere hundredth of a second. Arop also ran in Lausanne. He challenged Wanyonyi again and also finished under 1:42 minutes.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen got his revenge for the painful defeat at the Olympic Games in the 1500m. There, the Norwegian broke in as the front runner and finished fourth. He had a pacemaker on the Pontaise and only had to run into the wind on the last lap. In the top time of 3:27.83 minutes, he kept the Olympic champion Cole Hocker from the USA at bay this time.

Although the evening in Lausanne was a little cooler than hoped for for the sprinters, the audience in the sold-out Pontaise saw top times: Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith crossed the finish line in 10.88 seconds over 100 m in a slight headwind, while 200 m Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo from Botswana impressed in 19.64 seconds.

A murmur went through the audience when Anderson Peters from Grenada threw his best throw. The javelin landed beyond the 90 m mark (90.61).
