Mallory Swanson scored the golden goal after just under an hour in front of 48,000 spectators. The Americans, who triumphed for the fifth time in their eighth Olympic tournament but for the first time since 2012, remained unbeaten throughout and without losing points.

For their part, the Brazilians, for whom 38-year-old five-time world player Marta only came on as a substitute following a red card in the final group game, had already lost to Japan (1-2) and Spain (0-2) in the group stage.
