Jonas Omlin's days at Borussia Mönchengladbach appear to be numbered. He has been removed as captain and no longer has a place in the team squad. He has also lost his number 1 position. It is a precipitous fall for the player from central Switzerland.

  • Jonas Omlin was removed as Borussia Mönchengladbach's regular goalkeeper, captain and member of the team council.
  • Numerous injuries in particular led to his sporting downfall: Omlin has already missed 50 competitive matches since January 2023.
  • With a contract until 2027 but no sporting prospects, he is likely to leave Gladbach soon.

Gladbach coach Gerardo Seoane made his decision shortly before the Bundesliga kick-off. Moritz Nicolas is the new and old No. 1, Jonas Omlin is still the one to watch. The player from central Switzerland also no longer has a place in the team squad (including Nico Elvedi).

"The impressions of the past few weeks and discussions with the previous captains have prompted us to reorganize the management structure. We wanted to create new stimuli without turning everything upside down, because the players who are now in the team council have also gone before," Seoane is quoted as saying.

In the last five league games, Omlin was still allowed to play with the armband on his arm. However, the 31-year-old was unable to do much advertising on his own behalf - only one point was scored and he conceded a total of 14 goals in the final Bundesliga game, which saw the foals slip to tenth place.

It fitted in with his unsuccessful season. At last year's season opener in the summer of 2024, Omlin still started as the regular goalkeeper and captain, but after three games he had to take a break due to a tendon injury in his lower leg. His replacement, Moritz Nicolas, "performed well" according to Seoane and thus "earned further appearances" according to his coach; Omlin was officially only a substitute until Nicolas' injury in the spring. Omlin had already missed large parts of the season before last due to a persistent shoulder injury.

In the national team, Omlin fought a duel with Kobel

Omlin, who was brought in from Montpellier in 2023 as the successor to club icon and compatriot Yann Sommer, missed a total of 335 days, meaning he has already missed a cumulative 50 competitive matches for Gladbach and the national team.

Not so long ago, the former Lucerne and Basel keeper fought a (private) duel with Gregor Kobel for the position behind the established (and now retired) Yann Sommer in the national team. In the end, coach Murat Yakin opted for Kobel, Omlin was allowed to travel to Qatar, but was only second deputy.

Before the 2021 European Championship, the hierarchy was reversed under coach Vladimir Petkovic - but Omlin missed the tournament due to injury. The last time the player from central Switzerland played for the national team was in the summer of 2022. Omlin has a total of four international caps.

His contract with Gladbach runs until 2027, but it is currently more than doubtful that Omlin will be able to fulfil it. Perhaps a fresh start would be the best solution for all parties. After all, Omlin often seems to attract bad luck - in the form of injuries - at Gladbach.
