Canadian ice hockey player Alex Formenton, who was still under contract with Ambri-Piotta at the beginning of the year, is calling time on his career at the age of just 24.
This has been reported by several North American media, referring to ongoing proceedings.
Formenton and four other players from the 2018 Canadian junior national team are accused of having sex with a woman against her will after winning the gold medal at the U20 World Championships. In the wake of this scandal, Formenton turned himself in to the police in January, but always maintained his innocence. He was subsequently released by Ambri-Piotta.
According to court documents obtained by Canadian TV station CBC, the forward from Barrie is currently working full-time in the construction industry and has chosen this path in order to secure a regular income so that he can earn a living and pay his legal costs.
Formenton has played 109 games in the NHL (23 goals and 16 assists) and 46 games in the National League (20 goals and 9 assists) in his career.
The case made waves in Canada because the Canadian federation had swept the woman's complaint under the carpet with a million-dollar payment.
