At first it looked as if the favorites from Oceania would also win the gold medal in the third edition of an Olympic tournament in 7s rugby in the sold-out Stade de France. Joseva Talacolo gave the two-time Olympic champions the lead in the first half.

But the French have an exceptional player in their ranks in Antoine Dupont, and the 27-year-old did not disappoint. First he set up Aaron Grandidier's try, then he put the ball over the line himself twice more for his third and fourth tries of the tournament, finally sending the home team into ecstasy with their gold medal premiere.

Just like eight years ago in Rio, South Africa secured bronze, beating Australia 26-19 in the match for third place.
