The road races at the Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Zurich begin with a success story from a Swiss perspective. Hand cyclist Sandra Fuhrer surprisingly wins bronze in the H4 category.
Fuhrer even led the race at the last intermediate time, but then had to let herself be overtaken by Jennette Jansen from the Netherlands and Cornelia Wibmer from Austria on the way to Sechseläutenplatz. Jansen won gold in the final sprint ahead of Wibmer, with Fuhrer crossing the finish line in third place 15 seconds behind her.
This is the Bernese athlete's first ever medal in an international race at her World Championship debut. "It's a big surprise for me, I didn't expect it and I have to let it settle a bit," said the 38-year-old, describing her feelings.
This is Switzerland's seventh medal at its home World Championships in Zurich, and its fifth in para-cycling. The race, which was held in the rain, was less pleasing for Sandra Stöckli. The St. Gallen native had to pull out early on due to poor circulation.
