HC Davos is completely off the pace in the early stages of this season. Rapperswil-Jona and the ZSC Lions maintain their unbeaten record. The most important facts from Tuesday's games.
Desolate HCD
HC Davos made a complete fool of themselves in Langnau. Already after the first period they were trailing 0:3 in the Emmental. In an effort to shake up his team, captain Andres Ambühl, of all people, overdid it. The experienced player made a check on the head of Oskars Lapinskis and had to go to the showers. Even a timeout by coach Josh Holden had no effect; 39 seconds later it was 5:0. In the end, the Grisons were left with a heavy bill, their third defeat in their fourth game. With the 7-0 win, the SCL Tigers equaled their highest win against Davos from 2018.
Shorthander puts Lugano on course
Thanks to a strong final third and double goal scorer Luca Fazzini, Lugano won the classic against SC Bern 6:4. However, Mirco Müller scored the most important goal two seconds before the end of the middle third to make it 3:3 while short-handed. Marco Lehmann also confirmed his good early form with his third and fourth goals of the season, but he was unable to prevent Bern from losing for the third time in a row.
Rapperswil-Jona with their fifth win
The game between the unbeaten Rapperswil-Jona Lakers and the winless bottom team Ajoie was an expectedly clear-cut affair. The St. Gallen side overturned an early 0:1 deficit with ease, with Tyler Moy and Malte Strömwall scoring twice in a 6:2 victory. Ajoie are anything but top-division worthy at the start of this season. Their record after four rounds: 0 points, 7:20 goals.
ZSC Lions make it unnecessarily tense
In the duel between the last two champions, the balance of power was initially crystal clear. The ZSC Lions celebrated their fourth win in four games against Genève-Servette, while Geneva remained winless. Nevertheless, the Zurich team must be annoyed about losing a point because they were careless with their many chances. Sakari Manninen was able to equalize Rudolfs Balcers' early lead a good six minutes before the end. In overtime, the previously strong Servette goalie Robert Mayer was then outwitted by Dean Kukan from an acute angle to score the winning goal 2:1.
Kloten continue to surprise
Kloten also picked up at least one point in the fourth game. Against playoff finalists Lausanne, they even did it without overtime for the first time. The Zurich lowlanders scored once in each period, Thomas Grégoire's 1:0 was the first powerplay goal of the season. The 3:1 victory is a rarity: Kloten had lost all of their last six home games against Lausanne, with their last success dating back to before their promotion in September 2017.
Säteri the penalty hero for Biel
Fribourg-Gottéron twice came back from behind against Biel, but still ended up losing their second home game, which was sold out as usual. Biel's Finnish goalie Harri Säteri clearly outplayed Reto Berra. While he was only beaten by Christoph Bertschy, Berra was unable to fend off any of the three attempts.
