High jumper Salome Lang is ending her career at the end of the season.

According to a statement from Swiss Athletics, the 26-year-old from Basel said that her body could no longer cope with the high demands of competitive sport.

"My retirement has nothing to do with the fact that I didn't make it to the Olympic Games this year," explained Salome Lang. "Rather, it is the result of the realization that I could not reach my best level again without taking long-term health risks. This is not worth it to me." Over the course of her career, she has repeatedly struggled with back problems.

Salome Lang had her best season in 2021, when she qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In the same year, she also jumped a Swiss record (1.97 m) at the Swiss Championships in Langenthal and finished 5th at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.

In the coming weeks, Lang will be competing at Weltklasse Zürich (September 5) and for LG Basel Regio at the Swiss Club Championships in Winterthur (September 14).
