For once, fewer medals will be awarded in Paris 2024 than at previous Olympic Games. However, the decrease - from 339 competitions in Tokyo to 329 this year - is small.
The only new addition to the Olympic program is breaking, which is better known here as breakdancing. There will be 16 men and 16 women competing for two sets of medals in this sport, which emerged from hip-hop culture in New York in the 1970s - albeit without Swiss participation. Two additional sets of medals will also be awarded in sport climbing, which was held for the first time at the Olympic Games in Tokyo three years ago.
In contrast to Tokyo, baseball, softball (one decision each) and karate (eight) were canceled. These sports were only included in the Olympic program in 2021. Weightlifting also had to be cut. In Paris, only five sets of medals per gender will be awarded in this sport, compared to seven in Tokyo.
The 329 medal sets that will be awarded at the upcoming Summer Games are still significantly more than in Rio de Janeiro 2016 with 306 decisions.
