National ice hockey coach Patrick Fischer and the Swiss federation will have to look for a new assistant for at least all test games. Swede Tommy Albelin is moving to the New York Islanders.

Tommy Albelin is returning to the National Hockey League (NHL). After his magnificent active career (two Stanley Cup winners, 1987 World Champion with Sweden), he worked as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils organization from 2007 to 2015. Since 2016, the 60-year-old Albelin has assisted Patrick Fischer with the Swiss national team.

Albelin will continue to be available to the Swiss national team. It was agreed that Albelin would join the Swiss team until the home World Championships in Switzerland in 2026, after the Islanders were eliminated from the NHL playoffs. Albelin will be a permanent assistant to Fischer at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
