Just like last year, a Czech woman wins at Wimbledon. She wins in an eventful final.
Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova has been crowned Wimbledon champion. The 28-year-old won the surprise final in London against Italian Jasmine Paolini 6:2, 2:6, 6:4. Krejcikova thus celebrated her second Grand Slam triumph in singles after the 2021 French Open title.
The Czech is the successor to her compatriot Marketa Vondrousova and earned the equivalent of around 3.2 million euros in prize money. Paolini, the first Italian finalist at the grass court Grand Slam tournament, received just under 1.7 million euros. Just over a month ago, Paolini had also reached the French Open final, but had no chance against the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek.
In the men's singles, last year's Spanish champion Carlos Alcaraz and seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic from Serbia will face each other on Sunday in a repeat of the 2023 final.
