With 15 titles, the Albiceleste are the record champions of the Copa America together with Uruguay, while Canada is taking part in the tournament as a guest for the first time.
Messi broke another record as soon as he stepped onto the pitch in the US state of Georgia. With 35 matches, the Argentine superstar has now played the most games at the Copa America. He was previously tied with Chile's Sergio Livingstone.
Argentina face Chile in the group stage of the Copa America next Tuesday, while Canada play Peru on the same day.
