The Swiss team will be defending its title in the mixed team competition at the World Cycling Championships in Zurich on Wednesday without Stefan Küng and Mauro Schmid. The duo will not compete in order to rest.

The decision made by Swiss Cycling officials at the request of Küng and Schmid has its origins in the Tour of Spain. Küng and Schmid have shown outstanding performances during three weeks at the Vuelta and have used up a lot of energy in the process. In the road race at the World Championships in Zurich the Sunday after next, they will have to conquer almost 4,500 meters of altitude on the 274-kilometre route, a huge amount of work that requires a lot of substance.

Instead of Küng and Schmid, who were part of the team that became world champions in the two previous years, Johan Jacobs and Silvan Dillier will form the trio with time trial specialist Stefan Bissegger that will tackle the 27-kilometer loop. In the women's race, Switzerland will be represented by Elise Chabbey, Elena Hartmann and Noemi Rüegg as planned.
