Jalen Brunson wants to become an NBA champion. Sporting success is more important to him than even more millions in his bank account.

NBA star Jalen Brunson has extended his contract with the New York Knicks ahead of schedule and voluntarily waived a good 113 million dollars (103 million euros). The 27-year-old point guard agreed a four-year contract with the franchise from the metropolis of millions from the 2025/2026 season, worth around 156.5 million dollars (143 million euros) according to media reports. If Brunson had only extended his contract a year later, it would have been worth 269.1 million dollars (246 million euros) for five years.

Brunson is doing what Germany's basketball star Dirk Nowitzki once did with the Dallas Mavericks or football superstars Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. They gave up their own higher-paid contracts so that a better team could be put together. Brunson is also freeing up millions for new players by waiving his salary.

"Since Jalen joined us two years ago, he has consistently led by example and continues to show a willingness to sacrifice for this organization, his teammates and everyone in the Knicks family," Knicks President Leon Rose said.

Brunson is the crowd favorite in New York and is determined to win the Knicks' first NBA title since 1973. Last season, they lost in the quarter-finals against the Indiana Pacers. The team is now strengthening itself massively in the offseason.
