The Swiss trio at Wimbledon will not be strengthened. Leandro Riedi and Valentina Ryser fail in the final qualifying round.
Leandro Riedi (ATP 138) has to cope with an extremely bitter defeat. He was leading 2-0 in the third and final set against Australian left-hander Alex Bolt (ATP 234) and had a match point in the tie-break of the third - on his opponent's serve. In the end, however, the 22-year-old from Zurich lost 7:6 (7:2), 6:2, 6:7 (7:9), 5:7, 4:6 after three and three-quarter hours.
Only at Wimbledon is the decisive qualifying round played in three sets. It would have been Riedi's first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at his sixth attempt. However, he can still hope to be the lucky loser, as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, among others, could still withdraw after operations.
For Valentina Ryser (WTA 236), on the other hand, reaching the 3rd round was already an exploit. The 23-year-old from Bern took part in qualifying for one of the four major tournaments for the first time ever. On Thursday, she also held her own against the American Robin Montgomery (WTA 160), but lost 6:7 (3:7), 2:6.
This means that three Swiss players will be in the main draw next week: Stan Wawrinka (ATP 93), Dominic Stricker (ATP 151), who benefits from a protected ranking after his month-long injury break, and Viktorija Golubic (WTA 69).
