- Nati goalie Yann Sommer raves to blue Sport about the great defensive work of his front men in the game against Hungary.
- "We played aggressive counter-pressing and defended the opponent far away from goal," says Sommer.
- He describes the game against Scotland as a match point for the round of 16 and was impressed, but not surprised, by the strong Germans. "I knew that there was a lot of quality on the pitch."
Yann Sommer didn't really have much to do in the 3:1 win against Hungary. He plucked down a high cross, was on hand to deal with a sharp cross and had no chance against the opposing team.
blue Sport wants to know from Sommer whether he has prepared himself for more work. He says: "I prepare for every game in the same way. My goal is to be ready for everything that comes my way."
He sees the fact that he was unable to make a particular mark as a good sign for the performance of the players in front of him. "We conceded very little and defended far away from our own goal. We played a very aggressive counter-pressing game, which was crucial."
A goalkeeper like him at Inter Milan is used to not being under constant attack. The Italian champions have one of the best defenses in Europe. So is Sommer now also happy with the national team defense? The 35-year-old smiles and says: "I've always been happy with the national team's defense. But it doesn't work in every game, that's completely normal."
Sommer: "Already a match point for the round of 16"
However, if they succeed again today against Scotland, the national team will play the hosts Germany in the last group match for the group win. Sommer doesn't want to look that far ahead just yet. "For now, it's against Scotland, which is already a match point for qualifying for the round of 16. We'll see what happens after that game."
When asked whether he was surprised by the Germans' furious 5:1 win over Scotland in the opener, Sommer answered. "No, I expected it to a certain extent. I know a lot of the German players and I know the coach well. I knew that there would be a lot of quality on the pitch," he told blue Sport.
