Fabian Staudenmann wins the Bernese Cantonal Wrestling Festival in Burgdorf.
The 24-year-old defeats Samuel Giger in the final round for the first time in his career, repeating last year's victory at "his" sub-federation festival.
In a spectacular final act, Fabian Staudenmann put the guest from north-eastern Switzerland on his back after almost twelve minutes, literally at the last second. After a high-class duel and to the great delight of most of the almost 12,000 spectators, Staudenmann, who had been slightly ailing beforehand (gastrointestinal problems), prevailed over Giger with a foot thrust and a follow-up push on the ground.
The two giants of wrestling had already faced each other in the first round of the morning - for the first time since the Unspunnen-Schwinget last fall, when Giger had laid the foundation for his most important victory to date in the first round against Staudenmann. This time there was no winner (for the time being).
Fifth win of the season
And so the two met again in the final round. Both attacked vehemently in the sweltering heat and sought a decision. Because if they had been defeated, local hero Matthias Aeschbacher from Rüegsauschachen would have inherited the victory.
When the latter was almost a fact, Staudenmann still had the better end of the deal. He celebrated his fifth wreath victory this year and will therefore be the top favorite at the ESV jubilee Schwinget at the beginning of September.
The Bernese Cantonal Festival marked the end of the "Burgdorf Trilogy". With the Emmental, the Oberaargau and now the cantonal festival, three wreath festivals were held at the same location within eleven days for the first time.
Ott wins in Schaffhausen
Damian Ott celebrated his fifth wreath victory at the Schaffhausen cantonal festival in Stetten. In the final round, the St. Gallen native put Domenic Schneider, who had previously been tied on points, on his back with an inner hook after five and a half minutes.
It was Ott's first success in Schaffhausen and his first wreath victory this year, after the Kilchberg winner from 2021 had to make do with second place at the Thurgau and St. Gallen festivals.
