Katie Ledecky is now in third place in the ranking of the most successful athletes at the Summer Games, behind her US compatriot Michael Phelps and Larissa Latynina (USSR).
The 27-year-old Ledecky has been the dominant swimmer on the long crawl for more than a decade. She managed the double over 800/1500 m in Paris, as she had previously done in Tokyo. The triumph in the 800 m crawl on Saturday was the now nine-time Olympic champion's fourth in a row after London, Rio and Tokyo. Ledecky is also planning to compete at the 2028 home games in Los Angeles.
Caeleb Dressel and Isabell Werth also made it into the top ten in Paris at the weekend. Although swimmer Dressel was not part of the victorious US quartet in the mixed medley relay in the final, his performance in the preliminary heat also counts towards the statistics. With nine Olympic gold medals since 2016, the 27-year-old ranks 7th.
Right behind Dressel is dressage rider Werth, who is the new German record medal winner with eight gold and six silver medals after her team Olympic victory and second place in the individual competition. The 55-year-old Werth won her first Olympic gold medal in Barcelona in 1992.
Artistic gymnast Simone Biles is also on the verge of entering the top 10. The US high-flyer has won seven gold, one silver and two bronze medals so far. On Monday, the 27-year-old will compete in the two apparatus finals on balance beam and floor.
