McCrea is a British-Swiss dual citizen and has been competing for Switzerland for five years, but lives and studies in Poole in England.

The 100 m breaststroke is McCrea's showpiece event and he was not considered to be a prime contender for gold. But the diminutive athlete improved his personal best time by two seconds, finishing in 1:27 minutes, despite not being able to use the leg kick and having virtually no glide phase. After winning bronze at the 2024 European Championships and silver at the 2023 World Championships, the youngest member of the Swiss delegation has now added Olympic gold to his palmarès.
