Meanwhile, Sweden underlined its status as the number 1 nation in orienteering. The 32-year-old Tove Alexandersson won her 20th World Championship gold medal. She took 15 seconds off Simona Aebersold with a time of 16:14 minutes. Russian-born Natalia Gemperle, who has been eligible to medal for Switzerland since 2023, lost 19 seconds.

Polsini gave himself the biggest present for his 25th birthday. The Basel native won his first medal at a major event. He lost 23 seconds to the winner Martin Regborn, but kept two other Swedes in third and fourth place at bay. Matthias Kyburz, who will compete in the Olympic marathon in Paris, was missing as the Swiss figurehead.

Further sets of medals will be awarded in Scotland on Sunday with the relays and on Tuesday with the knock-out sprint.
