Tanja Hüberli/Nina Brunner in the hunt for a medal on the sand, Elena Lengwiler on the water and Morgane Métraux and Albane Valenzuela on the grass: The Swiss Olympic highlights from Thursday.
Beach volleyball. Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner have their first of two chances to win a medal on Thursday. In the semi-finals, the two women from central Switzerland will face the Canadian duo Melissa Humana-Paredes/Brandie Wilkerson, the Olympic fifth-placed team from Tokyo 2021, in the early evening (at 5.00 pm). If they don't make it through to the final, Hüberli/Brunner will still have the bronze medal match on Friday evening.
Athletics. Annik Kälin starts the heptathlon on Wednesday at the Stade de France. On the program for the first day are the 100 m hurdles (10.05 am), the long jump (11.05 am), the shot put (7.35 pm) and the 200 m (8.55 pm). The women's 4x100 m relay team with Salomé Kora, Sarah Atcho-Jaquier, Léonie Pointet and Mujinga Kambundji will also compete in the first round at 11.10 am.
Sailing. Elena Lengwiler goes into Thursday's decision in kitesurfing in sixth place in the intermediate classification. The 28-year-old was in the lead after two days of competition, but then lost five places, mainly due to the unfavorable weather conditions, and has not competed since. The Medal Series with semi-finals and finals are now scheduled for Wednesday (from 13:33). Yves Mermod and Maja Siegenthaler will contest their medal race in the Mixed 470 with a one-day delay.
Golf. After a formidable start with 3rd and 13th place, Morgane Métraux and Albane Valenzuela will start the 2nd round of the women's Olympic golf tournament shortly after 9.00 am on Wednesday morning.
Modern pentathlon. The competitions begin on Thursday with the classification rounds in fencing. Switzerland is back at the Olympic Games for the first time in 16 years, when Belinda Schreiber from Bern finished eleventh in Beijing. Former triathlete Alexandre Dällenbach, who lives on the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, will be competing in the men's event, while Anna Jurt from Obwalden, the former U19 European champion, will be competing in the women's event.
Cycling track. The Vélodrome National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines will see the first Swiss track cyclist in action. Alex Vogel will compete in the omnium in the oval located around 30 km southwest of the center of Paris. The eventing competition, in which the Thurgau native won silver at the U23 European Championships in 2020, consists of four parts. The medals will be awarded at around 7.30 p.m. in the final points race.
