Third and fourth medals for Switzerland at the European Swimming Championships in Belgrade: Antonio Djakovic from eastern Switzerland wins bronze in the 200 m crawl, Lisa Mamié from Zurich in the 200 m breaststroke.
The 21-year-old Djakovic made up three places in the last 50 meters with a brilliant final spurt, finishing in 1:46.32. The success is all the more valuable as the Thurgau native is in the middle of training for the Olympic Games. Two years ago in Rome, he won silver twice in the 200 and 400 m crawl.
As expected, the Romanian David Popovici, who was initially even on course for a world record, took gold.
Lisa Mamié, the defending champion, was unable to repeat her victory from the last European Championships, but finished third to win the fourth Swiss medal this year. However, her time of 2:26.10 is a good second over the Olympic time limit (2:23.91).
As the best Swiss swimmer at the moment, the 25-year-old from Zurich can still hope to take part in the Olympics thanks to the universality rule, which is designed to enable as many nations as possible to take part.
