In the decisive phase of qualifying for the third sprint race of the season, the world champion was 93 thousandths faster than Briton Lando Norris in the McLaren. Norris' Australian team-mate Oscar Piastri and George Russell in the Mercedes will line up on the second row of the grid.

For the second time this year, Verstappen will tackle a stage over the shortened distance from the very front. In Miami, he used the perfect starting position to take victory. In Shanghai two weeks earlier, he had also finished first despite starting fourth on the grid.

Verstappen has also set the tone in the two races in Spielberg so far over a distance of around 100 kilometers, which corresponds to around a third of a Grand Prix stint. Two years ago and last season, he took advantage of the best grid position to win.

Team Sauber and its drivers remain in the doldrums. The Finn Valtteri Bottas will start the sprint from 18th on the grid, the Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu from the very back in 20th position.
