- The Danish players and their coach vehemently demanded that the referee interrupt the match.
- Coach Kasper Hjulmand also recalls an accident 15 years ago when a player from his team was struck by lightning and seriously injured.
Just under half an hour has been played in the European Championship round of 16 between Germany and Denmark. Dark clouds gather over the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. There is lightning and thunder, heavy rain sets in. While the Germans search for the opening goal, the Danes complain several times to referee Michael Oliver and demand an interruption. The English referee initially allowed play to continue before interrupting the match.
Denmark's coach Kasper Hjulmand also called for a thunderstorm interruption. After the match, he recounted a dramatic experience in his career. "I wasn't afraid, but of course I take care of the players. Yes, it's true, one of my players was struck by lightning," said the 52-year-old after the game.
Hjulmand thinks of Jonathan Richter. The former FC Nordsjaelland footballer was struck by lightning during a training match in 2009. Hjulmand was assistant coach at the time. Richter survived the accident, but his lower left leg had to be amputated.
"It was right to stop the game"
The fear of a similar disaster seems to have been present in the Danes' minds. "The lightning was directly above the stadium," said Hjulmand. "I saw that my players reacted to it and I think it was right to stop the game."
After just under 25 minutes, the match could continue. Without any further incidents due to the weather, Germany prevailed 2-0 and now advance to the quarter-finals, where the hosts will face the winner of the match between Spain and Georgia.
