The second world record in an individual discipline at these Games was set by American Bobby Finke. The 24-year-old from Florida improved the previous record set by China's Sun Yang exactly 12 years ago in the 1500 m crawl with a time of 14:30.67. Just like three years ago in Tokyo, Finke managed the double in the 800 and 1500 m crawl.

Sarah Sjöström achieved the expected victory in the 50 m crawl just a few days before her 31st birthday. The Swede thus achieved the double over the shortest crawl distances and made her fifth Olympic Games the most successful. While the victory in the 100 m was somewhat surprising, the victory in the 50 m was as clear as expected. In 23.71 seconds, the world record holder over this distance distanced second-placed Australian Meg Harris by almost three tenths. China's Zhang Yufei came third.

For Léon Marchand, the four-time Olympic champion, the swimming competitions ended with a bronze medal in the 4x100 m medley. With Marchand as breaststroke swimmer, France finished behind winner China with 100 m crawl Olympic champion Pan Zhanle and the surprisingly second-placed Americans. The Americans won the women's 4x100m medley in a world record time of 3:49.63.
