Steve Harwell celebrated numerous successes with his band Smash Mouth.
"I'm a Believer", "All Star" and "Walkin' on the Sun" were all global hits.
Behind the scenes, however, the 56-year-old struggled with his alcohol addiction.
According to British media reports, the Smash Mouth singer died of liver failure on Monday.
Harwell had previously been admitted to a hospice where, according to his manager, he only had a few days to live. His liver was no longer functioning.
"I'm a Believer", "All Star" and "Walkin' on the Sun": Smash Mouth's hits went around the world at the end of the 90s.
Now the voice of long-time frontman Steve Harwell is said to have fallen silent forever. As the British newspaper Sun reported on Monday evening, the singer is said to have passed away. The media had already reported in advance that the singer was dying.
The 56-year-old had reportedly been struggling with health problems for several years. His situation was said to be so serious that his family had already said goodbye to him. After a lengthy stay in hospital, he wanted hospice care at home so that he could spend his last days there.
Liver, heart and brain disease
According to the musician's manager, Harwell's years of alcohol abuse were to blame for his early death. His liver was no longer functioning properly. He also suffered from heart problems and Wernicke's encephalopathy, a brain disease.
Steve Harwell became world-famous with his band Smash Mouth at the end of the 90s. The song "All Star" in particular became a cult hit - partly because it featured so prominently in the movie "Shrek".
However, Steve Harwell left the band in 2021 after videos of him at a gig went viral. Harwell insulted the audience, staggered and slurred his words. Even then, the singer revealed his struggle with his health. Harwell retired from the music business while his band continued with a new singer.
