Queens also have salaries, but these are made up of allowances. Exactly how much money does a queen regent receive? And where does the money come from?
No time? blue News summarizes for you
- The Swedish royal family is one of the wealthiest monarchies in Europe, with total assets of around 70 million francs and annual income from state grants and investments.
- King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands receive a total of 46 million francs in royalties, including income from shareholdings in companies such as Shell.
- The British Queen Camilla does not receive any direct state support, but does receive part of the allowance that the entire British Royal Family receives.
- However, Charlène and Albert, the princely couple of Monaco, are clearly the richest.
The queens of Europe need money - not in the form of donations, but a salary. But how much do the royals earn? And what is the total wealth of the royal families?
One of the richest monarchs in the world is Queen Silvia of Sweden, whose fortune is estimated at around 45 million francs. The entire Swedish family generates income from various shares and real estate. The so-called apanage, i.e. a financial allowance, amounted to just under 150 million Swedish kronor in 2021 - around 13 million francs.
This is less than other royal houses and also less than the income from his own investments.
The total assets of Carl Gustav and Silvia of Sweden amount to the equivalent of around 70 million francs.
Mary and Frederik now earn three times as much
The "Business Insider " also writes about the money at the Dutch court. They also invest in real estate and shares through a royal company. Willem-Alexander and Maxima, for example, have a stake in the oil company Shell.
In 2022, the royal allowance amounted to around 48 million euros - Willem-Alexander received just under 1 million euros in cash, while Maxima received 410,000 euros.
Mary and Frederik of Denmark have also had big wallets recently. They have only been on the throne for a few weeks. As prince, the king received an annual salary of just under 3 million francs, with a good ten percent going to Mary. She received a salary of 25,000 euros per month in 2023.
Since her accession to the throne, this amount has tripled for the Danes. For Mary, this amounts to 1 million francs per year.
According to "Business Insider", this is a figure that Letizia of Spain can only dream of. The Queen receives 148,000 euros a year - putting her at the bottom of the list of regents in Europe. If you add up Letizia's dresses - like "UFO No More " - you get 58,000 euros.
Camilla receives no direct subsidy
And what about the British royals? Apparently things are different for Camilla. Her predecessor was Prince Philip, who received the equivalent of 359,000 pounds a year from the British Parliament - Camilla doesn't receive a penny. This follows a law intended to prevent taxpayers from having to pay more for the Queen's upkeep.
However, Camilla still receives a state subsidy, as she still works. This amount is paid out annually by the government to the entire British royal family, which amounted to £86.3 million in 2022. That amounts to one franc and 43 centimes per person in the UK. It is not clear how much Camilla will receive personally.
Nevertheless, her private fortune is highly valued because money from the duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster also flows into her coffers.
Monaco leaves the royal houses far behind
Compared to Great Britain, the Norwegian royal family is still paid for with tax money. This costs taxpayers around 50 million francs per year. Of this, 1.2 million goes to King Harald and Queen Sonja, while around 1 million flows into the wallets of Haakon and Mette-Marit.
And if you're wondering which monarchy is the most expensive in Europe: Monaco. In the Principality, each inhabitant pays an average of 1.2 francs for Charlène and Albert.
The Prince's total assets amount to 810 million francs - and that's not including his properties in Monaco and France. Princess Charlène is not starving either: the regent is said to have around 125 million francs in her bank account - the annual "pocket money" is 1 million.
