The Copa America will also be played from Thursday. Defending champions Argentina will compete in the USA against nine South American teams and six guests from Central, North America and the Caribbean.
In addition to the ten national teams from South America, led by record winners Uruguay and Argentina (15 titles each) and five-time world champions Brazil, the hosts of the upcoming World Cup will also be competing in the 48th Copa America. Like Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama, the USA, Canada and Mexico qualified via the CONCACAF zone's Nations League.
The stars of the upcoming Copa, which will be played every four years in parallel to the European Championship from this year onwards, include Argentina's captain Lionel Messi, Brazil's Vinicius Junior and Uruguay's Luis Suarez. Only one player from the Super League, Boris Cespedes (Bolivia) from Yverdon-Sport, is taking part.
The tournament opens on Thursday in Atlanta with the match between world champions Argentina and Canada, featuring Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies among others. The final will take place in Miami on July 14, a few hours after the decision at the European Championship.
The Copa America is the first of three consecutive major football events in the USA. In 2025, the Club World Cup will be held for the first time with 32 teams. And the following year, 78 of the 104 World Cup matches will be played in American cities. Eight of the stadiums nominated this summer for the Copa America will also host World Cup matches in 2026.
