The 24-year-old from Aargau made short work of the outsider. After just 47 seconds, he was the winner after a small score and subsequent hold on the ground.

The next hurdle is likely to be much higher for the 2022 European Championship bronze medallist. In the round of 16, he will face Canada's Shady Elnahas, the current number 3 in the world rankings and this year's runner-up at the World Championships.

The 30-year-old Khankan, who fled the war zone in his home country almost nine years ago, now lives in Bergheim near Cologne.
