Spain wins the gold medal in the women's Olympic water polo tournament for the first time. The Spaniards beat the Australians 11:9 in the final.
The Spaniards made history in the pool. They gave the Australians no chance in the final in the La Défense Arena. Only in the final did Australia come back from 6:11 to 9:11.
Spain's women won silver twice at the Olympic Games in London 2012 and Tokyo 2021. By winning the gold medal, the Spaniards achieved a masterstroke. Spain survived the preliminary round without defeat and were only challenged by the Netherlands in the semi-finals. After a 14:14 draw in regulation time, the Spaniards won the penalty shoot-out 5:4.
Spain has also only won Olympic gold once in the men's competition. That was in Atlanta in 1996. The women have been playing water polo at the Summer Games since 2000.
