Zurich tennis pros Leandro Riedi and Viktorija Golubic reach the second round of the US Open for the first time. Qualifier Riedi even celebrates his first victory at Grand Slam level.
Leandro Riedi (ATP 435) qualified for his first ever Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, but then lost in the first round. He has now taken the next big step in New York. In ideal conditions, the 23-year-old put in a convincing performance from A to Z against Spain's Pedro Martinez (ATP 66).
Riedi never had to relinquish his serve throughout the match, hit fifteen aces and showed his concentration and strong nerves by fending off a total of eight break chances, especially in the tricky moments. In the end, the Zurich native converted his first match point after 2:10 hours to win 6:4, 6:2, 6:3.
His success had become increasingly apparent in recent months. After being repeatedly halted by serious injuries, Riedi is currently in top form and can finally realize his full potential. In the second round on Thursday, the 23-year-old from Zurich will face the number 19 seed Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina.
Redemption for Golubic
Viktorija Golubic (WTA 72) had to wait much longer for her first success at the US Open. The 32-year-old from Zurich had already reached at least the third round at all Grand Slam tournaments, but in New York she had lost in the first round every time in six attempts. All good things come in sevens.
However, Golubic had to literally endure the 3:6, 7:6 (7:3), 6:2 victory against Loïs Boisson (WTA 46). It was only at the start of the third set that she managed to take the French Open semi-finalist's serve for the first time. She then clearly had the upper hand in the third. After 2:15 hours, she converted her second match point.
Golubic will now face the 18th seeded Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the 2nd round on Thursday.
