The eight-man crew led by skipper Peter Burling increased their lead to 3-0 in the best-of-13 series against challengers Britannia on Sunday. The second race of the day had to be canceled due to insufficient wind.

The New Zealanders are still four points short of becoming the first team since the USA to win the world's oldest sporting trophy, founded in 1851, for the third time in a row. The Americans triumphed in 1987, 1988 and 1992.

Team Britannia, which had beaten Alinghi in the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup, incurred a penalty at the pre-start of the first race on Sunday because it gave way to its opponent at a crossing. The Brits were subsequently unable to make up the 75-meter deficit. In the end, the difference was 52 seconds.

"It was close. I thought it was good, but the referees had a different opinion," said Britannia's skip Ben Ainslie after the defeat when asked about the decisive scene.
